How to test a live scoreboard link before the game starts

A quick ScoreShare checklist for team names, spectator links, internet access and score updates.

By ·

The best time to discover a scoreboard-sharing problem is before the first point. A quick test with a second device can confirm that spectators have the right link and that updates reach the screen they are watching.

Check the game before sharing it

Choose the sport, enter the team names and check which team is on each side of the scoreboard. Similar names can confuse spectators, especially during a tournament. Use names that make the matchup clear without adding unnecessary personal details.

Confirm that you are sharing the intended game rather than a previous practice game. If you use a separate test game, keep its link out of the message you send for the real event.

Open the share link on another device

ScoreShare lets spectators follow a game in a web browser, so ask a helper to open the shared link on a second phone or computer. This checks the same path a family member will use. A QR code is useful in person; a clickable link is convenient for someone elsewhere.

Have the helper read back the team names. That catches a wrong-game link quickly. Do not assume that seeing a familiar ScoreShare page means the correct matchup is open.

Verify an update before play

In a practice game, change a score and have the helper confirm the new number. If you test on the actual game, return the score to its correct starting value and confirm that change too. Check both teams rather than assuming one successful update verifies every setup choice.

ScoreShare shares scores; it is not a video broadcast. Tell spectators what they will receive so they know to expect the scoreboard rather than a live camera feed.

Check the connection at the venue

The scorekeeper and spectators need internet access for live updates. Test where the scorekeeper will actually stand or sit. A connection that works near the entrance may behave differently at the field or court.

If an update does not appear, confirm that the scorekeeper changed the intended game, check internet access on both devices and reopen the correct link. Avoid repeatedly changing the score as a connectivity test during actual play; that can create confusing updates when the connection returns.

Choose one person to maintain the score

Agree who is responsible for updating points and who will check any disputed score against the game’s official record. This is an operating habit, not a claim that the app assigns scoring roles. If someone takes over, explicitly confirm the current score and game.

Get ScoreShare for iPhone or Android, create your game and send the verified link. A two-minute rehearsal gives spectators a clearer start and lets the scorekeeper focus on the game.

If a spectator’s score stops changing during play

First compare the game and team names on the scorekeeper’s device with the spectator’s page. Then compare the displayed score verbally. This establishes whether you are looking at the same game and whether the issue affects one viewer or everyone.

Ask a second spectator to check the same link. If only one viewer is behind, check that viewer’s internet connection and reopen the verified link. If multiple viewers are behind, check the scorekeeper’s connection and the current score in the intended game. A page that remains open can still be disconnected; seeing the scoreboard is not proof that new updates are arriving.

Keep a separate accurate record of the score while investigating. Avoid adding and subtracting points repeatedly as a network test during the live game. Once connectivity is restored, compare the displayed score with the agreed game record and have a spectator confirm it. Do not assume that a reconnection establishes the score is correct.

Make a useful support report

If the problem persists, note the time, device and browser or app version, whether it affected one or several viewers, and the steps you tried. Send only information needed to identify the issue through support. This checklist does not promise automatic recovery or make the shared scoreboard the official record for your competition.
